My three year old needs a sound proof room. As I sit here typing this, another storm is coming. We can hear the thunder in the distance and as the minutes tick by, it is getting louder and louder. She isn’t terrified of storms, but does not like the thunder, so every time thunder gets loud enough to wake her up, she gets up and comes to me. Wherever I am. Like right now, she’s sitting in the recliner behind me, nearly asleep again. If I had been in bed, she would have climbed into bed with me. She doesn’t seem to have a problem sleeping through the storms as long as they’re not deafeningly loud, she just doesn’t want to be alone. I have a blackout curtain in her room so the light from the lightning isn’t the problem. Actually that makes it more frustrating. If she couldn’t hear the storms, she’d stay in bed and be able to sleep the night away peacefully. Oh well, it could be worse. At least she’s not screaming her head off in fear or crying in panic. In fact, I just snuck a glance at her and she’s fallen asleep underneath her embroidered blanket. If I try to move her now, it won’t do me any good. As long as she can still hear thunder, no matter how distant, she’ll have nothing to do with going back to bed, but as soon as the storm has passed completely, then I can put the little squirt back in her own bed.

As I was sitting on my cedar porch swing earlier this evening, gently swinging to and fro, I reflected on the fact that I love the sound of the cicadas at this time of year. I have looked them up online and have discovered that they are called the scissor grinder cicadas. These are the ones that create that deafening roar of a buzzing sound. It starts lower and builds to a crescendo before tapering of, only to start up again. It seems that a lot of people mistake them for locusts, but they are indeed cicadas. The sound, that continues all day from morning until dusk, reminds me of the summers of my childhood. They also signal that summer is nearing its end, school is about to start, and with any luck the temperatures will begin to drop. They signal that it won’t be long before it’s time to pull out our custom embroidered hats and gloves to use at football games. I hated the sound of them when I was a kid. For some reason, the crescendo of the buzzing really bothered me, but luckily it doesn’t bother me any longer. I was driving down the interstate the other day, and above the roar of the road, the wind screaming in my ears from my open windows, and the blare of my radio, I could still hear the cicadas. And all felt right with the world.

Word to the wise: don’t try to have a conversation over the sound of a lawnmower. Better yet, don’t try to yell at your fourteen year old son over the sound of a lawnmower. Your throat will not thank you. The yesterday, I needed to tell him something as he was mowing the yard and then proceeded to stand there talking to him over the sound of our riding lawnmower for a full five minutes. Then a bit later I noticed that he was not driving, shall we say, as carefully as he should have been with our rather expensive mower so I went out again to… ahem…’talk’ to him about it. As it turned out, I lost my voice. Gone. I was croaking the rest of the day yesterday. Today I am better than croaking stage, but not back to full-throated glory just yet. Now would probably be a good time to wrap my favorite custom embroidered scarf around my neck and rest my poor throat for the remainder of this evening. Perhaps then tomorrow I will be back in my full “Drill Sergeant Mom” mode…

My fourteen year old recently went to camp for a few days. It sounds like he had a really good time and learned a lot about hunting and conservation. He was able to learn many new things and has shown an interest in learning to hunt. I think that would be a wonderful that he and my dad could do together. He also was very proud of his newfound knowledge about hunting rifles and his apparent natural ability to shoot well. He showed me two of his targets that he brought home and on one, his first shots were fairly far off since, as he explained it, the site on the gun was off, but by the third shot he had adjusted his aim accordingly and had hit the target. The other target he had hit all of his shots very well. He also told me that in the clay shooting contest they had, he got first place by shooting nine out of ten! I was very proud of him and glad he had been given the opportunity to go to this camp. I’m thinking about getting him a 3D embroidered hat for his birthday that’s coming up with a target on it. I think he might like that. Of course, he did have one complaint, though. They didn’t feed them enough! Boys…

August is here and moms everywhere are rejoicing. As much as they love their kids, the start of August means one thing above all else to a mom – school is almost starting. Particularly stay-at-home moms, who are stuck with, I mean get to love their kids, 24/7. When it’s time for school to roll around once more, they count the days until that first day, and once it arrives they make sure their little ones look sharp in their embroidered shirts and nice, clean (non-holey) jeans, snap a “first day” photo of their little squirts, stick them on the bus (or drop them off), shed one little tear of missing, and then heave a huge sigh of relief. Of course, this isn’t the case teachers. I imagine they dread the end of summer almost as much as their kids do. Or those crazy homeschoolers. They never get that “Ahhh, the kids are back in school.” feeling. I’m just kidding, I’m all for homeschooling if it’s the right thing for a family. In fact I wish I could home school, but I know myself well enough to know that I am one of those mothers that desperately needs that “Ahhh, the kids are back in school.” feeling. As much as I do indeed love my kids, and they are good kids (most of the time), I need my space, man!

Do you realize school is about to start (17 days for my kids), which means it is almost fall, then Christmas??? Where did summer go? Being Fall means time to start thinking about Christmas gifts. And with my family, it is also a big birthday season. Embroidered items make great gifts. You can get custom embroidred cinch backpacks for the kids with their names on them. You can get monogrammed towels for the parents or in-laws. You can get personalized jackets for everyone else. People like seeing their names or initials on products. It gives them a sense of it is mine, and no one else has one like it. Embroidered fleece blankets are also a great gift. You can embroider them with your company logo as gifts to employees.

Remember, it is never too early to start your Christmas shopping and getting into the giving spirit.

Did you know a quality embroidery job always starts with quality digitizing? Digitizing is the process that takes a design, and converts it to a map of sorts for the actual stitches. The stitches will come together and create the design. A good digitized file is crucial for a good, clean embroidered design on the garment. A professional digitizer will also select the appropriate stitch type as well. Computerized programs are often used to digitize a design file, however a professional digitizer should always review the file and may need to make manual adjustments to the file so it will sew cleanly. As much as the automated programs help, they often need to be tweeked for best results. Then, once the file has been adjusted as needed, the embroiderer will do a sew-out which is a sample of the design embroidered onto a piece of fabric. A material that is similar to the actual order works best as fabric style does make a difference on how the design embroiders. A design going on a hat for example, will sew differently than it would on a tee shirt. After reviewing the sew out, the digitizer may continue to make digitizing adjustments as needed until the design embroiders perfectly.
